Before the Ingredient, the Soil: How We Care for the Origin of Our Raw Material

The quality of an ingredient doesn't begin at the processing plant. It begins in the soil where the fruit grows. Aerial view of citrus orchards

When people talk about the quality of a citrus ingredient, the conversation usually starts at the processing plant. But the story begins earlier, in the soil where the fruit grows.

Citrojugo’s raw material comes from the orchards of SiCar Farms, our sister company. There, caring for the soil is part of everyday work.

A resource that needs care

Soil is a crucial natural resource for agriculture, and it needs ongoing care to stay productive. Sound agricultural practices keep food production in balance.

That is why we add liquid and solid organic matter that supports the soil’s structure. This helps restore its structure and porosity, and encourages ion exchange between the soil, the plant and microorganisms.

Biofertilizers we make ourselves

To keep that balance and improve our soils, we produce our own biofertilizers:

  • Compost. A blend of manure and other natural ingredients. It helps reduce waste, improves soil health and makes the production cycle more efficient.
  • Worm Humus. A biofertilizer rich in microorganisms and nutrients. It improves soil health, stimulates plant growth and reduces the need for chemical products.
  • Vermicompost. An organic amendment that regenerates the soil, improves its water retention and adds beneficial microbial life. The result is healthier, more resilient crops with less reliance on synthetic products.

OMRI Listed bio-inputs

To strengthen nutrient uptake in our crops, through both soil and foliar application, we use our own bio-inputs, OMRI Listed for organic use:

  • MultiRoot-Fulvi, a rooting agent and soil enhancer. Soluble organic matter that increases fertility and the growth of symbiotic microorganisms at the root. (OMRI code SIW 19084)
  • CitroFol-D, a liquid foliar nutrient. A highly absorbable multimineral that prevents and corrects plant deficiencies and promotes growth, development and crop productivity. (OMRI code SIW 19803)

Soil and climate

Caring for and improving soil is deeply connected to caring for the climate. Every practice that brings life back to the soil is also a way of caring for the environment where we grow.

What this means for you

As a vertically integrated citrus company, we know the origin of what we process. The ingredient that reaches your formula begins with soil we care for every day.
